with Lori Taylor

A TWO Day Summer Camp Class - Tuesday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 25
10:00am-12:00pm (Four hours total)
Open to ages 11-16
Monsters can be found lurking in the shadows and creeping into our dreams! Everyone’s idea of a monster is different and can be anything from a cryptid to a feral chicken or annoying sibling! So why not release the bones of your creature in a story of your own making?
How can you capture your MONSTERS! Snare them into a article in a zine! What is a zine? A small DIY collectable, tradeable magazine that captures your own experience! Zines are a popular way of exchanging ideas and literature on your life!
Create two different format styles of stories in this class with artist and author/illustrator Lori Taylor and print one finished copy to share. Learn composition, layout, and drawing skills.
Day 1: Make the standard digest ½ page stapled zine. Create characters by drawing and inking to be cut-out and collaged on mixed media paper. Paint a background with tempera paint, monoprint, and stamp as a stage for your creatures.
Day 2: Learn to fold a ¼ page zine into an eight-page non-stapled format. Tell your story in pictures. Add a monoprint, stamp or make a transfer over pages to set the stage for your beastly monsters. Write text with a black art pen, draw your creature or transfer your sketch! Add final creative finishing touches and your zine is ready to be copied, printed, and shared with friends!
Lori will supply: bleeding tissue paper, tempera sticks, Canon scanner/printer, circle punching tools, stamps, stencils and craft scissors.

KIDS Summer Camp (2 Days): FANTASTICAL BEASTS - Book and illustration- Ages 11-16
with Lori Taylor

Ages: 11 - 16
A TWO Day Summer Camp Class
Thursday and Friday, June 26 and 27
10:00am-12:00pm
Open to 11-16 year olds
“FANTASTICAL BEASTS! Book and Illustration”
Tell your tall tale of action and adventure through mixed media art and illustration with book artist and illustrator Lori Taylor.
Focus on your favorite beast or capture many in pen and paint! Explore monoprinting and abstract expression for fantastic backgrounds with a limited palette. Then search for the subject after folding the paper into an eight page book.
Use cool paint pens and techniques to draw and learn composition for a stronger story. Bookmaking! Mixed Media unleashes your creativity by telling your tale or a favorite theme in mixed media. Fold a quick “dummy” on plain paper to plan out your book’s theme or tale and get ideas flowing. Fold watercolor or mixed media paper in half and then into quarters.
Gather and bring stuff you'd like to use(ephemera), vintage text, sheet music or other themed collage elements to layout.
Next, get into the flow by painting the background. Then, stamp, stencil and collage the elements of the story and create a fun textured cover.
These easy to make small books can hold many big moments experienced in a day. Make and collect editions as a keepsake or a special gift. As with all books, they are meant to be shared. We will have a show and tell refreshment time and pose our books at the end of class.
Lori supplies: stencils, stamps, tempera sticks. These items will be available to share, but feel free to bring your favorite pens, pencils, or decorative items and interesting collections.
Be sure to bring your favorite drawing pens and pencils! Or papers you love.
