This wheel class is designed for individuals who have some experience with throwing on the pottery wheel and want to focus on extending your pottery skills.

The class fee includes your time in the Mud Room, instruction and guidance, a bag of clay, kiln time, and glazes.

Fun with Broom Making

Fun with Broom Making

Dive into broom making by building several types of handmade brooms. Watch your skills and broom collection grow with each project. Use the lovely brooms you make as decorations, gifts, cleaning tools, or just as a beautiful display!

You will be making: 

  • a 10”-12” whisk broom ( pictured at right ) will teach you the fundamentals of broom making.
  • a hearth broom which teaches you how to build a broom on a handle. A hearth broom is built on a short handle with 18” broom corn.
  • a turkey wing broom that uses an amazing way to show off your new skills. They are about 16” finished size.

Experienced folk teacher Nancy Binkowski will be conducting this introductory broom making workshop. What fun we will have!

All materials included in registration fee.

 

Nancy Binkowski of Wilder Creek Workshop, began her broom making career more than 10 years ago. Since then, her love for teaching and her joy of broom making have grown together and now she teaches at a growing list of festivals, private events and school and more. Recently, her work is being used at Fort Ticonderoga, NY which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Her latest teaching assignments include teaching at Michigan Folk School and assistant teaching at John C. Campbel Folk School, in North Carolina.

Her lighthearted approach to teaching ensures every session is enjoyable for all participants. It fills her heart with happiness when her students comment on how much fun they have had in her workshops.

Guide to Musical Improvisation

Join experienced guitarist and instructor, Brian Curran for a relaxing afternoon exploring and experiencing improvisation! (No instruments necessary, but they are certainly welcome.)

Taxidermy Maintenance and Basic Restoration

Class Description:

This class will teach methods for the care and maintenance of taxidermy pieces andcollections, as well as basic restoration techniques for repairing damaged and agingtaxidermy mounts. Using donated taxidermy and some vintage pieces from my own collection, topics coveredwill include insect prevention and treatment, as well as cleaning methods that are safe to use on taxidermy.

Students will also learn how to assess damages, performrepairs, and try out recoloring methods on damaged taxidermy.

Students are welcome to bring easily transportable damaged taxidermy that they own to work on in class (if it is a transportable size-classroom is in the basement at 219 Michigan Ave.) Or bring photos of larger taxidermy for restoration assessment if they would like to.

Students will be able to try out techniques on the demo pieces that will be provided.

All materials and PPE (personal protective equipment) will be provided.
