Eco-art: Plants and Papermaking
with Lori Taylor
It’s eco-magic paper day! Come for two days to play and learn about paper making with artist and author/illustrator Lori Taylor. Use plants to eco-dye paper, make paper, and print paper! Pretty papers for collage or use as greeting cards or backdrop for framed photos. So many reasons to celebrate growing seasons with handmade papers!
Utilizing harvested plant material pop fern, maple leaves, grape, and blueberries into a crock pot or steam iron to bring out their natural colors.
Using inexpensive watercolor paper, drawing, or printer paper, we let the plants design and color the page.
First half of day: Make a leaf and paper “sandwich” bundle to place in a crock pot set to cook for three hours. While cooking we will eco-print on paper with plants using distress, spray and soak paper in coffee and teas.
Lunch/snack: Q & A while going through Lori’s paper samples.
Second half of class: Tear paper for pulp to soak for the next day of paper making! Unwrap the steamed paper projects at the end of class to dry the bundles overnight.
It’s paper making play day! Making handmade paper is fun to do and you can add ephemera and bits to make it spectacular for collage, greeting cards, art substrate and more.
Learn how to build a simple “mould and deckle” frame to make paper. Take the batch of torn paper soaked overnight and blend.
After pouring the pulp, add in bits of ephemera if you like. Press ferns to imprint your paper or imbed flower petals, roots or even seeds so you can plant your paper!
Finally, flip the page to dry and your paper is ready to hang and dry to use in art projects.
