Introduction to Pastels

$168

with Preston King

Calendar Jun 24, 2023 at 10 am

How beautifully soft and muted are pastel compositions!  How does one do that with earth pigment sticks?

Preston King, an award winning pastel artist, lives in Georgia but has relatives in West Branch. And, because he is coming north to visit, he's offering a beginner/intermediate class in pastels in the Creativity Center at the Artisan Village.

In six hours of classtime Preston will teach the basics and then guide registrants as they produce two to three original works.  In a relaxed and supportive environment and using reference images, he will address both the basics and composition.  Expect lots of individual attention.

Registrants will need the right tools to be successful with pastels, so Preston will bring materials for you to use.  This will include special paper, pastels, easels, backboards and tape.  Please bring $10 cash to class to reimburse him. Of course, you will take home your compositions, but he keeps the other things for other classes.

Class will include the history of pastels, composition and color theory, practical application using reference images, mounting paper, and more practical application.

NOTE:  Students are encouraged to bring their lunch or may choose to leave to get something but there will not be a scheduled lunch break.

In the afternoon, students will be assigned a photo reference image and work independently with individual instruction.  Finally, students will experience in process group critique and end of day critique.

Please note:

Friday, June 23 rd:  Please join Preston as he demonstrates his pastel techniques on Friday from 3:00-5:00 upstairs at Artisan Village.

Saturday, June 24: Six hour class

Sunday, June 25: Preston will be available for a continuing Optional Pastel class from 10:00-1:00.  Registeration is required and only open to those taking the Introduction to Pastels class.  Register for Optional Pastel Class at
