Watercolor Painting

This class is three days: June 9, 10, and 11.

Lian Quan Zhen is a world class watercolor artist and painting author. Lian painted while practicing medicine in China, and immigrated to the US in 1985. His paintings hang in collections all over the world.

During the three day watercolor painting session, Lian teaches basic techniques as well as his unique methods, including "Color Pouring and Blending" and "Paint Around.” Four to six short demos each day lead into practice sessions that allow students to learn more easily. Participate in helpful critique sessions as Lian takes you through several paintings.

Open to students of all skill levels.

Students can bring lunch or order takeout.

MATERIALS LIST

Brushes - Synthetic and/or sable brushes: Windsor and Newton, American Journey and Loew-Cornell recommended.

Round - number 4, 6 & 8 Pointed - number 2, 3

Flat - ¼ inch (with wedge shape at end of handle for applying masking), ½ inch and 1 inch

Colors - tubes  (only three colors are used)

One tube from each of the three primary colors: Blue - Antwerp Blue (Windsor and Newton), Prussian Blue or Phthalocyanine Blue Red Shade (M.Graham &Co.); Yellow - Hansa, or Azo Light light (M.Graham &Co.), Windsor Yellow (Windsor and Newton), Bumblebee or aureolin Yellow (American Journey). Red - Pyrrol or Napthal Red (M.Graham &Co.), Permanent Red Deep (Windsor and Newton) or Joe's Red American Journey) Other similar primary colors are OK. 

Paper 

Half sheets (15"x22", or 16"x20") 140 lb Cold Press watercolor papers, Arches or Kilimanjaro, NO EXCEPTIONS. 3-day workshop needs 3

Palette

One large size palette like John Pike Watercolor palette (not little ones; large white color plate is OK).

Masking Fluid

A new bottle of light colored art-masking fluid: Pebeo Drawing Gum, Shiva Liquid Masque by Richeson Mediums or Windsor and Newton's yellowish color masking are recommended. If Cheap Joe’s does not have them buy them from Amazon.com.

Other

One plywood board or gatorboard size about 16"x23" for taping down the half sheet size watercolor paper, Three small dishes for making color liquids, a roll of masking tape or clear packing tape, 2 sheets of graphite papers (transfer paper, erasable), a hair dryer, a medium size water sprayer, a brush washer (a jar contains water for cleaning brushes), an apron, 3 sheets of tracing papers size about 15"x12", a pair of scissors, a B2 or #2 pencil, erasers and one roll of white paper towel. If you can't blow the color liquids while painting, get a can of Compressed Gasduster from office supply store. 

 

Additional Notes:

Safety First! Classes will be set up following social distancing guidelines. Your instructor will wear a mask. We will sanitize before and after all events. Please bring your mask to wear.

Cancellation Policy: If a class you registered for gets canceled, you will have the option for a refund or gift certificate. If you register for a class and decide to cancel, you will be given a gift certificate for the amount paid, which may be used in the gallery or for another class or event.

Summer Floral Watercolor

Ruth is a Costa Rica-born American artist who has been teaching for over a decade. She has exhibited and won awards world-wide and is a member of many watercolor societies. Ruth will teach the fundamentals of loose watercolor painting with flowers as a subject, and students will walk away with more confidence in watercolor.

This class is designed for adults.

 

Students need to bring their own supplies.

Watercolor paper: 140 lb. cold pressed. 11x15”

Watercolor pigments: Alizarin crimson, Cadmium red, Yellow ochre, Permanent yellow, Burnt sienna, Ultramarine blue, Cerulean blue, Olive green , Titanium white

Join award winning artist Donna Russell for a 90 minute plein air session at Grayling Community Park (by the pavilion at the Chamber building). As an experienced artist and teacher, she loves to assist students with pastels, water color, pencils, charcoal or whatever your favorite media is. Be prepared to stretch your experiences by creating art outdoors! 

Students aged 12 and up are welcome to bring the media and supplies needed to create a unique work in a beautiful outdoor setting.  As a retired teacher with a degree in fines arts and many years teaching experience, Donna will provide individual guidance at the appropriate level in concepts such as perspective, color, composition and materials usage. 

Please bring whatever you need to create - an easel, a stool, canvas, wood, acrylics, oils, charcoal. Bring water or snacks, whatever you'd like for the 90 minute session.

Four Wednesday afternoon sessions are available.  Please register separately for each session. Gallery members may use their promo codes and memberships are still available online and at the gallery.  Aug. 4, 11, 18, 25
